09-17-13 - A Day in the Life

Wake up at 730 with the baby.

Show her some toys, shake them around, let her chew on them. Practice rolling over, she gets frustrated, help her out. She wants to walk around a bit, so pick her up and hold her while she walks. Ugh this is hard on my back. She swats at things, I move away the dangerous knives and bring close some jars for her to play with. She's getting frustrated. Show her the mirror baby, she flirts for a minute. She gets fussy; check diaper, yep it's dirty; go change it. Lay her down and make faces and do motorboats and stuff. Try to read her a book; she just wants to eat the pages and gets frustrated. Walk her around outside and show her some plants, let her grab some leaves. She wants to walk, help her walk in the grass. Ugh this is hard on my back. Getting tired now. Take her in and put her in the walker; put some toys on the walker, she swats them off, pick them up and put them back. She's getting bored of that. Show her some running water, let her suck my finger. She's getting fussy again.

God I'm tired. Check the clock.

It's 800.

Twelve more hours until she sleeps. ZOMG.

True fact... babies are kinda boring (unless you really are wired to be totally blown away by convincing yourself you're seeing all these little milestones). Good thing: they pretty much only get better over time. There's always something cool to look forward to happening.

12 hours till she sleeps wot? Not like still 3 naps a day? I seem to remember like 3-hour stretches of awake, maybe an hour of that taken up by eating, maybe 30 min to an hour of good-tempered playtime, and the remainder some sort of crankiness from being tired or hungry.

This is also first baby time, where you probably feel bad reading a book or playing a videogame or watching a show (ack TV screen poison!) or something when you get bored, while the kid gnaws on your ankles for a couple minutes.

Yeah I was just gonna do a post on that topic. Maybe I'll go do it now.

That lasted for like the first month, trying way too hard and knocking myself out. Now I'm like fuck yeah if she watches TV hallelujah, anything I can do to save my own sanity.

That said I'm probably still trying too hard. I haven't been able to reach that deep apathy and neglect that parents get on their Nth child.

It's just a more realistic approach. Really the whole 'omg I must spend every waking moment fussing over this baby' thing is a product of modern excess. The baby doesn't need it, and we don't need it. Much better to give the attention when you're ready to give that really good high quality attention. All the same argument we all know over and over :)

There's no rush really to figure it all out, either... part of the fun of the first one is over-doing it a bit! And there's sooooo much leeway. Unless you're really outright trying to mess the kid up the range for what will produce a 'good kid' is pretty wide.

You might already have something like this but just in case you don't ...

WORTH EVERY PENNY

It will keep her entertained for half an hour to an hour at a time and you can be in the same room but not have to directly engage her at all times. Give them plenty of exercise for the legs and learning to walk without you breaking your back to hold them up. And it tires them out so they sleep better and longer.

Thinking back on when my daughter was that age (she's three and half now) it was easily the single best investment we made toy-wise.

Ha! Yeah we inherited one of those but she's not big enough for it yet. I considered putting a book under it so her feet could stand on something but decided that was going too far. Looking forward to it.
