I've just discovered that the clib srand() is a P.O.S. ; if you srand() with low values then the next few calls to rand() give you very predictable results. So, I did some hacky thing which seems to work ok -
void mysrand(int value)
{
	Journal::IO(value);

	value ++;
	srand(value + value * 67 + value * 1031);
}
